Nvidia and Qualcomm join Open Source Robotics Alliance to support ROS development

The launch of the Open Source Robotics Alliance (OSRA) by the Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF) marks a significant step in the development and maintenance of open source robotics projects, with a primary focus on the robot operating system (ROS).

ROS, initially released in 2007 by Willow Garage, has been instrumental in shaping robotics development over the years. With the establishment of OSRA, efforts to support and advance ROS and other open source robotics projects will be consolidated and strengthened.

The involvement of major companies such as Nvidia, Qualcomm, and Intrinsic as Platinum members underscores the importance of open source robotics in the industry. These companies bring significant expertise and resources to support the development and adoption of ROS and related technologies.

Nvidia’s commitment to leveraging ROS 2 for accelerated computing and AI applications highlights the growing importance of open source robotics in enabling advanced robotics capabilities. With former Open Robotics CEO Brian Gerkey now serving as Intrinsic’s CTO and appointed to the OSRA’s board of directors, there is continuity and leadership from within the open source robotics community, ensuring the alliance’s success in driving innovation and collaboration in the field.
