Adobe’s Camera Raw Plugin Introduces AI Reflection Removal
Adobe has introduced a cutting-edge AI-powered feature for its Camera Raw plugin, designed to tackle a common photography challenge: removing reflections from glass surfaces. Dubbed the “Reflection Removal” tool, this new feature uses artificial intelligence to make it easier for photographers to clean up their shots taken through windows. Announced on Thursday, the tool is currently available as a Technology Preview, allowing Adobe to gather feedback from its user community. In addition, Adobe has unveiled a new adaptive profile for monochrome photography, which is now available in public beta within Adobe Camera Raw.
The Reflection Removal tool addresses a problem that photographers often face when capturing images through glass. Reflections can disrupt the clarity and focus of a scene, detracting from an otherwise perfect shot. This issue is especially common when capturing unique moments, such as shooting the Northern Lights through an airplane window or photographing exhibits behind protective glass. Adobe’s new AI tool is specifically designed for these scenarios, enabling photographers to achieve clear and unobstructed images.
Using advanced AI algorithms, the Reflection Removal feature works by analyzing and separating elements in an image. When a photograph includes reflections caused by shooting through a glass surface, the tool detects and identifies the superimposed reflections. It then differentiates between the primary image and the reflection, taking into account variations in white balance, focus sharpness, and other factors. Once these elements are untangled, the tool reconstructs the image to present a clean and polished result.
Adobe has also hinted at plans to expand the reach of this innovative tool. In a blog post, the company confirmed that Lightroom, its flagship photo editing software, will soon support the Reflection Removal feature. This expansion underscores Adobe’s commitment to empowering photographers with advanced tools that simplify complex editing tasks, making professional-grade photo enhancement accessible to users at all skill levels.
