Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 is set to receive a significant microphone upgrade

Apple is reportedly gearing up for a major Siri overhaul in the iPhone 16, focusing on a substantial microphone upgrade.

The forthcoming iPhone 16, anticipated as the successor to the iPhone 15 series, is already making waves in the tech sphere with early speculations suggesting a significant enhancement in its microphone technology. Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from TF Securities International, known for his accurate predictions regarding Apple’s product developments, recently shared insights into the anticipated upgrade.

According to Kuo, the iPhone 16 models are poised to feature a substantial improvement in microphone specifications, primarily focusing on elevating the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The SNR is a pivotal metric that measures the strength of the signal recorded relative to background or ambient noise, and this enhancement is expected to have a profound impact on the Siri experience and voice input capabilities of the upcoming smartphones.

Notably, the microphone upgrade isn’t just about clearer audio; it is also geared towards improving water resistance on the iPhone 16 models. This strategic move aligns with Apple’s commitment to delivering devices with robust durability and enhanced performance across various conditions. The improved water resistance is likely to add an extra layer of protection, making the iPhone 16 more resilient in challenging environments.

Furthermore, Kuo’s revelations tie into Apple’s broader vision for Siri. The company has been repositioning its Siri team, emphasizing the inclusion of large language models (LLMs) and artificial intelligence-generated content (AIGC). This strategic realignment, initiated in Q3 2023, indicates Apple’s concerted efforts to infuse advanced language understanding capabilities and AI-driven functionalities into Siri, ultimately enhancing the overall user experience.

While the iPhone 16 is not expected to make its debut until the second half of 2024, these early glimpses into the device’s potential features underscore Apple’s continuous pursuit of innovation and its dedication to delivering cutting-edge technology in its future smartphone iterations.

The inclusion of upgraded microphone technology is expected to come at a cost. According to Kuo, the average sale price (ASP) of the microphones for all models in the iPhone 16 series could rise substantially — between 100 percent and 150 percent more than their predecessors. He adds that Apple’s component suppliers Goertek and AAC are expected to benefit the most from the company’s hardware upgrades.

Kuo isn’t the first to predict that Apple will offer significant upgrades to Siri with AI improvements to the iOS operating system next year. In October, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said that Apple was working on major upgrades to the voice assistant’s capabilities, powered by Apple’s own LLM, along with better suggestions for the Messages app. Despite purported concerns with the AI features, the improved functionality could be introduced as early as 2024, according to Gurman.
