Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez Faces Five-Game Ban from International Duty
Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez has been handed a five-game ban by South American football’s governing body, Conmebol, following an incident involving spectators after Uruguay’s Copa America semi-final loss to Colombia. The altercation occurred after the final whistle in July, leading to Nunez’s physical confrontation with fans in the stands. Alongside the ban, Nunez has also been fined £15,145 ($20,000).
In addition to Nunez, several other players have been disciplined. Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur received a four-game suspension, while Napoli’s Mathias Olivera, Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo, and Atletico Madrid’s Jose Maria Gimenez have each been banned for three games. The sanctions are part of a broader response to the disturbances that involved a total of five players being banned and 11 fined.
