Nothing CEO Carl Pei Hints at Imminent Launch of Next Smartphone; Potential Debut of Alleged Nothing Phone 2a

Rumored Debut: Nothing Phone 2a Expected at MWC 2024 Launch Event on February 27

Nothing’s CEO, Carl Pei, recently hinted at an imminent smartphone launch, sparking speculation about the possible unveiling of the Nothing Phone 2a. Leaks and rumors suggest that the UK-based startup, under Pei’s leadership, is gearing up to introduce an affordable iteration of the Nothing Phone 2. This potential launch is anticipated to coincide with Nothing’s scheduled event at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC 2024) slated for February 27.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Carl Pei teased the smartphone release by sharing an enigmatic image—a cutout resembling a dragon from a well-known cartoon series. Notably, this teaser aligns intriguingly with the forthcoming Chinese New Year celebrations, heralding the commencement of the Wood Dragon year on February 10.

While Pei’s post does not specify the name or model number of Nothing’s next handset or include details about when it will be launched, the company has scheduled an event titled Nothing to See that is scheduled for February 27, during MWC 2024. The alleged Nothing Phone 2a was previously spotted on the BIS India website, hinting at its upcoming debut in the country.

Leaked details from WinFuture’s Roland Quandt last week shed light on the potential configurations of the rumored Nothing Phone 2a. It’s anticipated to arrive in two variants: 8GB RAM with 128GB storage and 12GB RAM with 256GB storage, offered in classic Black and White color options. Quandt hinted at an expected price tag below EUR 400 (approximately Rs. 36,800) for the 8GB+128GB variant.

According to recent reports, the purported Nothing Phone 2a might be fueled by a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 chipset and operate on the Android 14-based Nothing OS 2.5. The device is rumored to flaunt a 6.7-inch full-HD+ AMOLED display featuring a 120Hz refresh rate, details of which emerged online last month.

Speculations suggest the handset will boast a dual rear camera setup, housing a 50-megapixel Samsung S5KNG9 primary sensor, and a 50-megapixel Samsung S5KJN1 sensor for ultrawide shots. Additionally, a 32-megapixel selfie camera equipped with a Sony IMX615 sensor is expected to cater to selfie enthusiasts and video call needs. As the anticipated launch date approaches, more insights about the Nothing Phone 2a are anticipated to surface in the coming weeks.
