NPCI Expands UPI Payments to UAE with Network International Partnership, Enabling QR Code Transactions
UPI Payments Now Accepted at Major UAE Retail Locations, Including Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Mall
QR-based Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments have officially made their debut in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), thanks to a new partnership between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and Network International. Announced on Wednesday, this significant move marks a milestone in expanding UPI’s reach beyond India and into the Middle East. Network International, a prominent digital commerce enabler in the MEA region, will integrate UPI payments across its extensive network of over 200,000 point-of-sale (POS) terminals throughout the UAE.
The introduction of UPI payments in the UAE aims to enhance the convenience and security of transactions for Indian tourists and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) living in the region. By scanning a QR code, users can now make payments seamlessly at major establishments including the Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Mall, and a wide array of retail stores and dining outlets. This integration will allow Indian travelers to use a familiar and trusted payment method while exploring or residing in the UAE.
Ritesh Shukla, CEO of NPCI International, emphasized the impact of this initiative, stating, “By growing UPI payment acceptance across merchants in the UAE, we are not only providing Indian travelers with a seamless and familiar payment experience but also promoting the use of innovative digital payment solutions internationally.” This expansion reflects NPCI’s broader strategy to establish UPI as a globally recognized and accessible payment solution.
The partnership with Network International is expected to bolster UPI’s international footprint, facilitating easier and more efficient transactions for Indian expatriates and tourists in the UAE. As the UPI ecosystem continues to grow, it aims to offer a unified and secure payment experience across different regions and sectors, aligning with the global shift towards digital financial solutions.
In addition to enhancing payment convenience for users, this move also underscores the increasing adoption of digital payment technologies in international markets. By integrating UPI into its POS systems, Network International is further solidifying its role as a key player in the digital payments space, supporting a diverse range of payment methods for consumers and businesses alike.
This development is a part of a broader trend of expanding digital payment infrastructures globally, aiming to create a more interconnected and efficient financial ecosystem. As UPI gains traction in the UAE, it may pave the way for similar integrations in other regions, contributing to the global acceptance and standardization of digital payment technologies.
