Steam Unveils Top-Selling and Most-Played Games of 2023 in ‘Best Of’ Showcase

Top Narrative Game Sellers: Baldur’s Gate 3, Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield Lead the Pack

Valve has recently unveiled its annual ‘Best of 2023′ list on Steam, offering a comprehensive view into the standout titles that dominated PC sales throughout the year. Instead of presenting a numerical ranking, the titles have been organized into distinct tiers — Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze — drawing from data collected between January 1 and December 15, 2023. Among the Top 12 category, a diverse blend of free-to-play multiplayer games and significant launches surfaced, with celebrated titles like Baldur’s Gate 3, Starfield, Cyberpunk 2077, and Hogwarts Legacy emerging as top-selling games. Surprisingly, even Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, despite receiving mixed reviews from both fans and critics, found its place among the upper echelons, attributed largely to its dedicated fanbase eager to delve into its multiplayer segment.

Familiar favorites such as Counter-Strike 2, PUBG: Battlegrounds, Apex Legends, Dota 2, and Destiny 2 solidified their positions within the Platinum tier. Notably, Destiny 2 is set to receive an expansion titled ‘The Final Shape’ in June this year. The Gold tier boasts stellar titles like the Resident Evil 4 remake, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Elden Ring, the latter having surpassed 20 million copies sold across all platforms, showcasing its immense popularity. This surge in popularity inadvertently propelled Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, a lesser-known FromSoftware franchise, into the realm of the top 24 best-selling games on the platform. Additionally, FIFA 23 from the previous year made a surprising appearance, owing to the anticipation surrounding its successor, EA Sports FC 24, which debuted midway through the year.

Apart from the overall Top Sellers category, Steam curated sections for New Releases based on gross revenue, Most Played titles, Early Access purchases, and more. Interestingly, recent releases that received mixed receptions across multiple platforms took center stage, with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Payday 3 emerging as notable mentions, despite the latter facing criticism for its perceived lack of content. While multiplayer games dominated the highest player count, several single-player adventures like Goose Goose Duck and Hogwarts Legacy held their ground alongside Baldur’s Gate 3, which, at its peak, drew in over 800,000 concurrent players on Steam. Surprisingly, Larian Studios, the developers of Baldur’s Gate 3, had anticipated a fraction of that figure (100,000) considering the game had been in early access for nearly three years. Presently, the expansive RPG boasts over 176,000 concurrent players, securing the fourth spot among the most-played games on the platform.

Moreover, 2023 marked a year where gaming studios effectively utilized early access to refine their games based on user feedback. Mintrocket’s ocean exploration and fishing game, Dave the Diver, emerged as a favorite among players, even becoming one of the most played titles on the Steam Deck. While titles like Vampire Survivor and Half-Life were expectedly present, surprisingly, Starfield managed to secure a top position despite concerns about optimization issues causing performance hiccups in crowded areas such as New Atlantis and the Wild West-themed Akila. Virtual reality gaming enthusiasts favored titles like Beat Saber, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR, and Half-Life: Alyx, offering immersive experiences ranging from intense battles against the alien Combines to rhythmic saber-wielding action.

As the gaming community anticipates further excitement, Steam is currently hosting its annual Winter Sale, offering substantial discounts on both new releases and returning favorites until January 5 at 10:30 pm IST.
