Disney Parks Blog Slip-Up: Hinted at Late 2024 Release for Star Wars Outlaws Game

Ubisoft’s ambitious Star Wars Outlaws, an expansive open-world game set in the iconic Star Wars universe, was initially rumored to target a ‘late 2024’ release window, briefly mentioned in a recent Disney Parks blog post. However, this information was swiftly corrected to a more generalized timeframe within this year, as confirmed by the publisher in response to inquiries by Kotaku. Unveiled during an Xbox Showcase, the game portrays a narrative set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi films, introducing players to the adventures of Kay Vess, a cunning space outlaw pursued due to a botched mission. Accompanying Kay is the adorable axolotl-like alien Nix, poised to assist players through certain actions, reminiscent of the BD-1 droid from Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Narrative Director Navid Khavari shed light on Kay’s character, stating, “This is a character who is just trying to get by—stealing, outwitting and conning folks.” The game aims to immerse players in the underworld experience, navigating through a time overshadowed by the dominant Empire, creating opportunities for the underworld to thrive. Kay and Nix engage in risky contracts and interactions with crime syndicates, contributing to their reputation and manipulating the faction system that dictates questlines and relationships, including the notorious Jabba the Hutt.

Last year, developer Massive Entertainment unveiled gameplay footage, showcasing Kay’s reliance on her resourcefulness rather than Jedi powers, wielding blasters and employing environmental weaponry to confront adversaries. The game also features traversal via a hovering motorcycle equipped with a nitrous booster and time-slowing abilities, enhancing combat scenarios. Exploring a multitude of planets aboard the ‘Trailblazer’ ship offers a promising open-world experience, offering varied encounters and rewarding off-the-beaten-path exploration.

The game boasts three distinct gameplay experiences— bustling cities, expansive open environments reminiscent of Tatooine’s deserts, and vast outer space. Players can expect encounters ranging from city life filled with NPCs and shops, expansive landscapes to explore, and engaging interstellar journeys, all contributing to a rich and immersive gameplay experience.
