Oppo Introduces AI Enhancements with ColorOS New Year Edition Update; Unveils Initial Rollout Plan for Compatible Devices

Key Announcement: Oppo Unveils AI Features at AI Strategy Conference

Oppo has recently bolstered its ColorOS with a slew of new artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced features, marking a significant stride in smartphone innovation. The unveiling took place at the company’s AI strategy conference, held on Monday, where Oppo detailed the capabilities of the new features and announced the initial lineup of phones slated to receive the update first. This transformative update, dubbed the ColorOS New Year Edition, is set to roll out in China, targeting both Oppo and OnePlus handsets. However, there’s currently no confirmation regarding the global availability of these features.

The announcement was made via a series of posts on Weibo, although many of the features had already been hinted at in earlier reports. Notably, some of the functionalities bear resemblance to those seen in flagship devices like the Google Pixel 8 series and Samsung Galaxy S24 series, which incorporate advanced AI capabilities via the Galaxy AI platform. According to Oppo, the ColorOS update will introduce over 100 AI-driven features to supported devices, promising enhanced user experiences across various aspects of the smartphone ecosystem.

Among the standout features introduced in the ColorOS update is the AI Deletion feature for images, reminiscent of the magic eraser functionality found in the Pixel 8 series. This innovative tool enables users to effortlessly remove unwanted objects or individuals from their photos by simply highlighting the area, allowing the AI to intelligently detect and erase them.

Additionally, the update introduces the AI Call Summary feature, which enhances call management by providing users with insightful post-call summaries. By leveraging AI technology, users can initiate “smart consumption” during calls, enabling the AI to transcribe and summarize conversations in real-time. Post-call, users can conveniently access detailed call summaries, complete with timestamps and concise summaries presented in both paragraph and bullet-point formats, ensuring a seamless and efficient communication experience.

A special focus has been given to Xiaobu, the voice-enabled assistant in ColorOS in China, which also gets multiple AI features. The company stated that generative AI was used to improve its dialogues as well as speech capabilities, making it more realistic. In addition, multiple new skills have been added to the assistant that can now perform more complicated tasks as well as a higher number of general tasks.

Xiaobu Photo Studio has also been added to the assistant, which can generate AI images. Further, an AI Greeting Cards feature has also been added to Xiaobu where users can design customized New Year greeting cards with the help of AI.

These AI features will first arrive in 16 smartphones across Oppo and OnePlus through the ColorOS update. For now, it will only be available on smartphones in China. These include the recently launched Oppo Find X7 and the Oppo Find X7 Ultra, Reno 11 and Reno 11 Pro, and OnePlus 12, as well as the Find X6 series, Reno 10 series, Find N3, Find N3 Flip, OnePlus 11, OnePlus Ace 3, OnePlus Ace 2, and OnePlus Ace 2 Pro.
