Android 15 May Enable Enhanced Video Stabilization for Third-Party Camera Apps

Third-Party Camera Apps on Android 15 May Soon Match Default App’s Video Stabilization

Android 15 could enable third-party apps to offer enhanced video stabilization, according to a recent report. Google’s upcoming Android OS might introduce a new ‘extension’ that allows alternative camera apps from the Play Store to use the same stabilization algorithms as the default camera app on a user’s smartphone. This change would potentially improve the quality of video stabilization available to users of third-party apps.

Android Authority discovered a new Camera2 extension called “Eyes Free videography” in the Android 15 code on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Camera2 extensions enable third-party camera apps to utilize algorithms that are typically exclusive to the manufacturer’s camera app. Currently, Google offers access to five extensions—Auto, Bokeh, Face retouch, HDR, and Night—on many smartphones running Android 14.

The Eyes Free videography extension on Android 15 aims to “lock and stabilize a given region or object of interest,” according to the description found by the publication. Unlike previous extensions that focus on improving photo quality, this new extension is specifically designed to enhance video stabilization in third-party camera apps.

Manufacturers will have the option to enable this functionality, providing their users with consistent video quality across different camera applications. Additionally, Google might develop a software-based solution to ensure that these advanced camera features are accessible regardless of the device manufacturer’s choices.

This potential update could significantly benefit users who prefer third-party camera apps over the stock camera app provided by their smartphone manufacturer. Enhanced video stabilization would allow these apps to deliver higher-quality videos, comparable to those captured using the default camera app.

Overall, the introduction of this new extension in Android 15 reflects Google’s ongoing efforts to improve the versatility and performance of third-party applications on its platform, ultimately enhancing the user experience for Android device owners.

The new Eyes Free videography Camera2 extension on Android 15 “aims to lock and stabilize a given region or object of interest”, as per the description for the feature spotted by the publication. While the previously mentioned extensions are related to capturing images, the new extension is designed to improve video stabilisation on third party camera apps.
