Announces Plans for NSFW Communities

The recent changes on X, formerly known as Twitter, regarding the handling of NSFW (not safe for work) content reflect a shift in the platform’s approach to adult-oriented material. Community admins now have the option to set an “Adult Content” label in their settings, allowing them to avoid having their community’s content auto-filtered. However, NSFW content will soon be filtered across X’s Communities by default if this label is not applied.

These adjustments follow earlier tests of NSFW communities on the platform, indicating a more direct embrace of adult content by X. NSFW content has long been prevalent on the platform, serving as a primary advertising avenue for sex workers and generating a significant amount of adult content-focused activity, including bots and spam.

Internal documents obtained by Reuters in 2022 revealed that approximately 13% of all Twitter posts included NSFW content, including nude photos, explicit videos, and pornography. Despite declines in other content categories like news and sports, adult content remained one of the fastest-growing genres on the platform.

The rise of spam bots promoting NSFW content has also been observed on X, with profiles containing links to explicit material and regularly replying to posts with messages directing users to their bios for more explicit content.

Overall, these developments highlight X’s acknowledgment and accommodation of NSFW content, reflecting the platform’s evolving stance on adult-oriented material and its integration into its community features.
