Apple Introduces AI Summarise Feature to Safari in iOS 18.1 Developer Beta

Safari’s Reader Mode to Include AI-Powered Summarise Feature for Condensed Content

Apple is rolling out its Apple Intelligence features to supported iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices with the latest developer beta updates. Starting Monday, users with access to the iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS 15.1 developer betas can now try out these new AI-powered features. These include enhanced contextual awareness for Siri, automatic movie creation in the Photos app, AI-assisted writing tools, and more. The Safari browser, in particular, has received a major update with the introduction of an AI-powered Summarise feature that condenses lengthy web pages and articles into short summaries for quicker reading.

AI Summarise Feature in Safari The Summarise feature is part of Apple’s new intelligence tools and was detailed in the release notes for the update. First reported by 9to5Mac, the Summarise feature works within Safari’s Reader mode, where it can extract key points from a page and present them to users in a concise format. This is particularly useful for long-form content like research papers or news articles.

To use the Summarise feature, users need to activate Reader mode in Safari, which is designed to strip away unnecessary page elements like ads and navigation menus, leaving only the core content. Once in this mode, a new Summarise button appears at the top of the page, highlighted with the new Apple Intelligence logo.

Upon tapping the button, the Summarise feature springs into action, scanning the entire webpage. According to reports, a purple glow representing Apple Intelligence lights up during the scan, offering a visual cue that the feature is working to distill the page into its key points.

How the Summarise Feature Works This AI-powered feature taps into Apple’s machine learning models to analyze content and extract the most relevant details. It’s expected to save users time by presenting them with the gist of lengthy articles or documents, enabling them to get the information they need at a glance. The feature could be particularly beneficial for users who frequently browse research materials, long news reports, or detailed blog posts.

Although still in beta, the Summarise feature could soon become a staple in Apple’s growing arsenal of AI-driven tools. It’s an example of how Apple is integrating machine learning and AI into everyday user experiences, aligning with the broader trend in the tech industry towards AI-enhanced personal productivity.
