Evolve Bank issued a cease and desist letter to a newsletter writer reporting on its data breach
The situation surrounding a data breach affecting a growing number of fintech companies has taken an unusual turn. Evolve Bank & Trust recently announced they were hacked and confirmed that the stolen data has been posted on the dark web. Now, Evolve has issued a cease and desist letter to a newsletter writer covering the ongoing situation.
Jason Mikula, the author of the respected industry publication Fintech Business Weekly, revealed that he received a cease and desist letter from the bank, instructing him not to share files from the dark web with any allegedly impacted fintech companies.
Mikula clarified that he wasn’t sharing such files but had offered to do so and had seen some of them. Examining hacked information is a common journalistic practice when reporting on security breaches to verify the occurrence and the nature of the data stolen.
In this instance, Mikula stated that he has connected with four individuals who have access to some of the files stolen in the breach and posted on the dark web, and he has reviewed some of the data himself.
