Hyundai Motor Group to Introduce Hybrid Cars in India by 2026

Hyundai and Kia Consider Hybrid SUV Comparable to Creta for Indian Market

Hyundai Motor Group is set to introduce its first hybrid cars in India as early as 2026, according to three sources familiar with the matter. This move marks a strategic shift for the South Korean auto giant, which aims to diversify beyond electric vehicles (EVs) and strengthen its foothold in a crucial automotive market.

The conglomerate, which includes Hyundai Motor and Kia, is currently evaluating a hybrid sport-utility vehicle (SUV) similar in size to its popular mid-sized Creta SUV in India, two sources with direct knowledge of the plans revealed.

Hyundai and Kia are both eyeing the launch of these hybrid SUVs in either 2026 or 2027. This timeline underscores their commitment to expanding their hybrid vehicle offerings while simultaneously progressing with their EV initiatives in the country.

Hyundai, recognized as India’s second-largest carmaker, sees the hybrid strategy as a complementary approach to its existing and future EV line-up. This dual focus is expected to cater to a broader range of consumer preferences and driving conditions in India.

Kia, also a significant player in the Indian market, aligns its plans with Hyundai, aiming to introduce hybrid SUVs within the same timeframe. This coordinated strategy highlights the group’s comprehensive approach to green mobility solutions.

Both companies’ hybrid and electric vehicle plans reflect their adaptive strategies to the evolving automotive landscape in India, ensuring they remain competitive and relevant in a rapidly changing market.

Mid- and long-term strategies for India, including EV and hybrid plans, featured in discussions held by Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung, during his second visit to the country last week in less than a year.
