Indian Audio Giant boAt Investigates Suspected Customer Data Breach

India’s leading audio and wearables brand, boAt, is currently investigating a potential data breach after hackers advertised a trove of purported customer data online.

A sample of the alleged customer data surfaced on a well-known cybercrime forum, containing full names, phone numbers, email addresses, mailing addresses, and order numbers. Upon review by TechCrunch, some of the data appeared to be genuine, confirmed through checks against exposed phone numbers.

According to the hacker, the breach occurred in March, resulting in the compromise of data from over 7.5 million customers.

In response, boAt issued a statement to TechCrunch acknowledging the situation and affirming its commitment to investigating the matter thoroughly. The company emphasized its dedication to safeguarding customer data.

“boAt is aware of recent claims regarding a potential data leak involving customer information. We take these claims seriously and have immediately launched a comprehensive investigation. At boAt, safeguarding customer data is our top priority,” the company stated.

The leaked data reportedly includes references to Shopify. It was reported by Indian outlet Athenil that the alleged hackers claimed to have obtained the data using credentials stolen from boAt’s systems.

boAt, backed by key investors such as Warburg Pincus and South Lake Investment, holds a dominant position in India’s market for wireless earbuds with nearly 34% share, as per IDC data. The company also commands a significant portion of India’s wearables market, boasting a market share of approximately 26%.
