Instagram is developing a feature that would enable users to allow others to put a ‘Spin’ on their Reels
Instagram is currently developing a feature called “Spins” for its Reels platform, a short-form video format similar to TikTok. This feature, first identified by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, enables other users to replace the text or audio in existing Reels. Instagram has confirmed to TechCrunch that Spins is still in the internal prototype phase and is not yet being externally tested.
The Spins feature could serve as a mechanism for users to initiate trends by creating templates that others can customize with their own creative variations. For instance, if a particular template gains popularity, users could modify the text or audio to adapt it to different contexts. For example, a video of a yawning dog with the caption “Me on Monday mornings” could be reshared with the caption “Me trying to stay awake in class” if Spins is enabled.
According to a screenshot shared by Paluzzi, creators would receive recognition for their original Reels each time someone creates a Spin based on it, allowing them to expand their audience reach. The screenshot also suggests that users would have the option to enable or disable the Spins feature for individual Reels using a “Spins” toggle before publishing. This feature provides users with control over whether their Reels are eligible for spins, offering flexibility in their content creation process.

It’s important to distinguish Spins from Reels’ existing “Remix” feature, which is essentially a clone of TikTok’s duet functionality. Remix allows users to appear in a video alongside the original content, providing commentary or reactions. In contrast, Spins offers a more collaborative and creative experience by enabling users to swap out text or audio in existing Reels.
If Spins were to be released, it would provide Reels users and viewers with a unique functionality not currently available on TikTok. While Reels initially emulated many features of TikTok, the addition of Spins could introduce a distinguishing feature between the two platforms, albeit a relatively small one.
As with any internal prototype, it remains uncertain when or if Instagram intends to make Spins available to the public. The development and release of new features often depend on various factors, including user feedback, technical considerations, and strategic priorities.
