Samsung is reportedly developing a rollable smartphone with a flexible display, which could be launched in 2025. According to industry sources, the upcoming device will feature a screen that can be extended into a much larger display by unrolling it, offering users a new type of foldable technology. If accurate, this would be a major step forward for Samsung’s innovation in the foldable smartphone category, six years after the company introduced its first foldable phone. The South Korean tech giant has yet to officially confirm this project, but its track record of unveiling novel display technologies, such as fold-and-slide hybrids, aligns with this latest development.
A recent report from The Elec, a Korean publication, claims that Samsung’s rollable smartphone will feature an extendable screen that can expand to a size of up to 12.4 inches. This would make it significantly larger than the current offerings in the foldable market, including Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate Design, which boasts a 10.2-inch display. If these details are accurate, Samsung’s rollable device would provide an experience more akin to a tablet when fully extended, making it ideal for multitasking, media consumption, and productivity tasks.
The smartphone is also rumored to include an under-display camera (UDC), a feature that eliminates the need for a traditional punch-hole or notch for the front camera. This would provide users with an uninterrupted display, enhancing the immersive viewing experience. UDC technology has already been used in some foldable devices, and its inclusion in Samsung’s rollable phone could signal the company’s ambition to perfect this feature.
However, the advanced technology and larger screen size could lead to a premium price tag for this rollable device. Samsung’s previous foldable models, such as the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series, have already been positioned at the higher end of the smartphone market. This development follows Huawei’s recent release of the Mate XT Ultimate Design, the world’s first tri-fold smartphone.
