Sony CES 2024 Unveils Exclusive Gravity Rush Movie Preview; God of War Series Writing in Progress

Cinematic Peek: CGI Animation in Gravity Rush Movie Presented at Sony CES 2024; Director Anna Mastro on Board

Sony’s CES 2024 presentation brought an unexpected treat for fans eagerly awaiting the Gravity Rush movie, offering a sneak peek into the highly anticipated film. Although the presentation refrained from divulging specific release dates or plot details, the showcased footage, designed to highlight Torchlight—the latest visualisation technology from Sony—captured a riveting scene featuring one of the characters gracefully leaping off a building, only to confront a menacing red, winged demon amid a backdrop of debris. The video seamlessly blended CGI and motion capture clips, debunking prior misconceptions about the movie being a live-action adaptation. Contrary to earlier reports, the directorial reins were in the hands of Anna Mastro (known for Secret Society of Second Born Royals), collaborating with screenwriter Emily Jerome (of Panopticon fame) for the second time.

Gravity Rush, initially developed by the now-defunct Japan Studio, narrates the story of an amnesiac protagonist named Kat, awakening in the floating city of Hekseville with gravity-manipulating powers. These abilities allow her to traverse vertical walls, maneuver across ceilings, and engage in mid-air combat against airborne adversaries. Originally released on the PlayStation Vita in 2012, the game utilized tilt controls for directional exploration. Despite its critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base, Gravity Rush faced commercial challenges. The game was later remastered for the PS4, and a sequel followed in 2017, solidifying its status as a cult favorite.

Sony’s PlayStation Productions label continues to expand its cinematic universe, with the Gravity Rush movie joining the ranks that began with the Tom Holland-led Uncharted film. The label has achieved success with additional hits like the Emmy-nominated The Last of Us series, the Gran Turismo movie featuring David Harbour, and the upcoming Twisted Metal on Peacock. During the CES presentation, Sony unveiled ongoing projects, including a Netflix series based on the post-apocalyptic game Horizon Zero Dawn, led by Steve Blackman of The Umbrella Academy fame. This adaptation will follow the journey of the young huntress Aloy, exploring her transformation from tribe outcast to formidable warrior battling hostile machines.

Simultaneously, Sony confirmed that writing is underway for a God of War series, destined for Amazon Prime Video. Rafe Judkins, creator of The Wheel of Time, is at the helm of this project, which is expected to follow the narrative beats of the acclaimed 2018 game. The storyline involves an exiled Kratos and his son Atreus embarking on a journey to the highest peak in the nine realms to fulfill the final wishes of Kratos’s deceased wife. While casting details and release windows for both series remain undisclosed, Sony’s commitment to expanding its gaming narratives into the realm of television and streaming platforms is evident.

Additionally, Sony teased a new project related to Patapon, suggesting the possibility of a remastered version of the original rhythm strategy game or an animated adaptation. This initiative aligns with Sony’s broader strategy, utilizing the new Torchlight studio space as a hub for creative experiments and innovative ventures within the entertainment landscape.
