Spotify’s Hi-Fi Audio Plan is in Early Development; CEO Promises Enhanced Features for Deluxe Plan
Unlike Spotify’s forthcoming deluxe plan, Amazon Music and Apple Music already provide lossless audio streaming at no extra charge.
Spotify has announced that it is in the early stages of developing a new subscription plan that will offer high-fidelity (hi-fi) audio streaming. This “deluxe” version of Spotify’s service is set to provide an upgraded audio experience, surpassing the capabilities of the current Premium plan. While specifics are still emerging, CEO Daniel Ek discussed the initiative during Spotify’s recent quarterly earnings call, suggesting that the plan is still in its conceptual phase.
The new “deluxe” plan is expected to be a significant step up from the existing Premium offering. Although details about additional features remain sparse, there is speculation that the plan might include advanced tools such as AI-driven playlist generation, which could enhance user experience. This move reflects Spotify’s continued effort to innovate and provide value to its subscribers beyond traditional streaming options.
Ek hinted that the deluxe plan will come with a higher price tag, potentially adding at least $5 to the monthly cost of the current Premium plan, which is priced at $11.99. This would position the deluxe plan as a premium offering within Spotify’s suite of subscription options, targeting audiophiles and users willing to pay more for superior audio quality and possibly other exclusive features.
Spotify’s announcement about this new plan follows its previous introduction of the Spotify HiFi service in 2020. The HiFi initiative was aimed at bringing lossless audio streaming to users but faced delays and has yet to be fully realized. The deluxe plan could potentially build on the HiFi concept, integrating it into a more comprehensive package with additional benefits.
In contrast to Spotify’s approach, rivals such as Amazon Music and Apple Music already offer lossless audio streaming without any additional cost. These competitors have positioned themselves as leaders in high-quality audio streaming, setting a standard that Spotify’s deluxe plan will need to meet or exceed to attract and retain subscribers.
