Substack’s Notes feature is gaining additional capabilities reminiscent of Twitter.

Substack is enhancing its Notes feature, making it more akin to the social network X. Now, users can post videos directly to Notes via the Substack app or web platform. Additionally, Notes can be embedded on external webpages.

The introduction of these features comes a year after Substack launched Notes in April 2023, aiming to attract users who were transitioning from Twitter following Elon Musk’s involvement with the social network. Notes enable users to share various content formats, similar to tweets, and are displayed in a dedicated feed resembling Twitter.

With the ability to post videos directly to Notes, Substack accommodates creators who are increasingly using video content on the platform. This move aligns with competitors like X and Meta’s Threads, which also support video posts.

The capability to embed Notes on external pages expands the reach of writers’ content beyond Substack’s platform. This feature allows Notes to be incorporated into news articles and other web content, similar to how X posts are often embedded.

Introducing Substack Notes

Substack reports that Notes has generated significant engagement, with thousands of paid and free subscriptions for writers and creators in the past month. The feature is particularly beneficial for users without large existing audiences.

Substack’s strategic moves to capitalize on Twitter’s instability include encouraging creators to migrate to its platform and introducing features like Chat and Notes. Meanwhile, X faces challenges, such as addressing its bot problem by planning to charge new users a fee before allowing them to post on the platform.
