Supergirl Movie Buzz: Milly Alcock from “House of the Dragon” Emerges as a Leading Contender for the Iconic Role

Stellar Contenders: Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly from “CODA” and “Zombies,” Respectively, Eyeing Supergirl Role in Upcoming Movie

James Gunn, the filmmaker and co-CEO of DC Studios, is on the lookout for the perfect Supergirl to join his revamped DC Universe continuity. Deadline reports that three actresses are set to screen test for the role in the coming month: Milly Alcock of “House of the Dragon,” Emilia Jones from “CODA,” and Meg Donnelly, known for her role in “Zombies” and her previous voice work as Supergirl in an animated Legion of Super-Heroes film. The character is expected to make a cameo appearance in a DC project before taking the spotlight in the standalone film, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.”

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was announced by DC Studios co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran in early 2023 as part of their revamped DC Universe chapter, ‘Gods and Monsters.’ This new phase is planned to unfold over the next 8-10 years, interconnecting storylines across movies, TV shows, animation, and video games. Adapted from Tom King’s version, the film will present a unique take on Kara Zor-El, who, having grown up on a floating chunk of Krypton, witnessed the tragic demise of those around her for 14 years before arriving on Earth. Described by Gunn as a “much more hardcore” Supergirl, this version departs from the familiar portrayal.

The director for “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” has not been disclosed yet, but actress-playwright Ana Nogueira has reportedly been chosen to pen the script. Interestingly, Nogueira was initially hired for a Supergirl spin-off tied to The Flash, a project later abandoned with the arrival of Gunn and Safran, who opted for a fresh direction. The executives, impressed with Nogueira’s previous work, discreetly brought her back to contribute to the new film.

Gunn is currently gearing up to shoot “Superman: Legacy,” the first live-action project in the DCU, scheduled for release on July 11, 2025, featuring David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicolas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Other upcoming projects in the DC Universe include an Arkham Asylum series, an animated show for Creature Commandos, “Booster Gold,” a limited series centered on Amanda Waller, and more.

As of now, the release date for “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” has not been revealed.
