U.S. Democrats Urge Apple and Google to Remove X and Grok Over Sexualised AI Images

Three Democratic U.S. senators have urged Apple and Google to remove social media platform X and its built-in artificial intelligence chatbot Grok from their app stores, citing the spread of non-consensual sexual images of women and minors.

In a letter published on Friday, Senators Ron Wyden, Ben Ray Lujan and Edward Markey said the two tech giants “must remove these apps from the app stores until X’s policy violations are addressed.” The letter argues that the continued availability of the apps undermines Apple’s and Google’s own app store rules prohibiting sexual or pornographic material and content that facilitates the exploitation or abuse of children.

X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, has faced growing global scrutiny after Grok generated AI-created images depicting women and children in sexualised or degrading contexts without consent. The senators noted that both Apple and Google have previously acted quickly to remove apps found to be in violation of similar standards.

“Turning a blind eye to X’s egregious behavior would make a mockery of your moderation practices,” the lawmakers wrote.

Apple and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment. X referred to an earlier statement saying it takes action against illegal content, including child sexual abuse material. X’s parent company, xAI, did not directly address the senators’ demands, reiterating only that criticism of the platform amounted to “legacy media lies.”

The pressure comes as regulators in several countries intensify scrutiny of X and Grok. In Britain, Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said she expected media regulator Ofcom to take action within days if the platform fails to comply with online safety rules.

While xAI has introduced some limits on Grok’s image generation for non-paying users, critics argue the measures are insufficient. Senator Wyden said the changes merely force some users to pay to create harmful images, while the platform continues to profit from abusive content.

TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, reported a 20.45% year-on-year rise in fourth-quarter revenue on Friday, beating market expectations as booming demand for artificial intelligence applications lifted sales.

Revenue for the October–December period reached T$1.046 trillion ($33.11 billion), based on Reuters calculations from the company’s monthly disclosures, up from T$868.46 billion a year earlier. The result topped an LSEG SmartEstimate of T$1.036 trillion and came within the company’s previous guidance range of $32.2 billion to $33.4 billion issued in October.

TSMC has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the global AI boom, supplying advanced chips to customers such as Nvidia and Apple. Strong AI-related demand has more than offset softer orders for chips used in consumer electronics, where pandemic-driven demand has faded.

The company is scheduled to report full fourth-quarter earnings on January 15, when it is expected to provide updated guidance for the current quarter and the full year. Investors will be watching closely for details on capital expenditure plans and revenue growth expectations.

TSMC’s Taipei-listed shares rose 44.2% in 2025, significantly outperforming the broader Taiwanese market, which gained 25.7%. The strong performance mirrors broader momentum in the semiconductor supply chain driven by AI. Earlier this week, Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics maker and a key Nvidia server supplier, also reported robust fourth-quarter sales.

According to a new leak shared on Chinese social media platform Weibo, Apple is preparing to move the iPhone 17e into mass production in the near future. One of the most notable changes tipped for the iPhone 17e is a refreshed front design. The device is said to feature Apple’s Dynamic Island, replacing the traditional notch seen on the iPhone 16e. This shift would align the budget-focused iPhone more closely with Apple’s premium lineup in terms of design language.

The leak also suggests that the iPhone 17e will retain a 6.1-inch display, matching the screen size of its predecessor. While the panel size remains unchanged, it is reportedly expected to keep the same 60Hz refresh rate, indicating that Apple may prioritize design refinement over display performance upgrades in this model.

According to tipster Smart Pikachu, Apple could begin mass production of the iPhone 17e shortly after CES 2026, which takes place from January 6 to January 9 in Las Vegas. The handset is reportedly being positioned to compete with so-called “lower-priced flagship” smartphones, offering a balance between modern design features and a more accessible price point.
