X, Owned by Elon Musk, Introduces Grok AI for In-App News Summaries

Formerly Known as Twitter, X Used to Have Human-Moderated Moments

X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, will soon offer AI-generated news summaries within the app using Grok, the chatbot developed by xAI. This new feature aims to enhance how users consume news directly from their feed.

Rather than relying on third-party news articles, the summaries will be derived from user tweets. This feature, named “Stories,” will initially be accessible only to premium subscribers, the company revealed on Friday. Although Stories does not currently cite external news sources, Musk assured the tech newsletter Big Technology that proper citations will be introduced in the near future.

Musk elaborated on the feature, stating, “As more information becomes available, the news summary will update to include that information.” This approach ensures that users receive the most current and relevant updates as events unfold. Big Technology was among the first to report on this new feature.

The AI chatbot Grok, responsible for generating these summaries, is not technically owned by X. It is a product of xAI, an artificial intelligence startup also founded by Musk. This distinction highlights the broader ecosystem of AI and technology ventures under Musk’s leadership.

Grok is trained using content from X, providing a tailored and contextually aware news summarization service. This unique training method leverages the vast amount of data generated by user tweets, ensuring that the summaries are grounded in real-time discourse.

Musk has been vocal about his vision for integrating AI across his ventures, and the introduction of Grok into X is a significant step in that direction. As the feature rolls out, it is expected to evolve and improve, offering users a more dynamic and interactive way to stay informed.

“Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year,” the billionaire said in a post on X. He had been scheduled to visit for two days — April 21 and 22 — to announce plans to enter the Indian market.
