Snapchat’s response to concerns over its “solar system” feature, which ranks users’ closeness to their friends, reflects the platform’s efforts to balance user preferences with potential negative impacts on mental health and relationships. While the feature aimed to provide insight into online friendships, it inadvertently caused hurt feelings and anxiety for some users.
In response to feedback, Snapchat has decided to disable the solar system feature by default, acknowledging that while it may be desired by some users, it can have negative consequences for others. By making the feature opt-in for Snapchat+ subscribers, the company hopes to strike a balance between meeting user preferences and avoiding potential harm.
Despite Snap’s assertion that the feature is not widely used, concerns remain about its impact on users’ emotional well-being. The feature’s ranking system, which highlights users’ positions in their friends’ solar systems, has led to uncomfortable conversations and even relationship issues among users.
Moving forward, Snapchat may need to consider further adjustments or alternatives to the solar system feature to address these concerns effectively. This could involve implementing more comprehensive user controls or providing resources for users to manage their online interactions and relationships more positively.
