EA Confirms Next Battlefield to Feature Modern Warfare Setting, 64-Player Maps, and Return of Classes

Battlefield 2042, Released in 2021, Was the Franchise’s Most Recent Entry

Battlefield Franchise Set to Return with Modern Setting and Classic Features
After nearly three years of absence following the launch of Battlefield 2042, Electronic Arts (EA) has confirmed the next entry in the long-running Battlefield series will return to its modern warfare roots. Battlefield, EA’s primary competitor to Call of Duty in the military first-person shooter genre, has faced mixed reception in recent years, with Battlefield 2042 being criticized for its controversial ‘Specialist’ system and the omission of a single-player campaign. Now, EA aims to return to the elements that made the franchise a fan favorite, offering a modern setting for the next game.

EA Confirms Modern Setting for New Battlefield Title
In a conversation with IGN, EA confirmed that the upcoming Battlefield game will once again be set in the present day, moving away from the near-future setting explored in Battlefield 2042. This shift back to a modern warfare setting brings the series closer to fan favorites like Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4, which are widely considered high points in the franchise’s history. EA even shared concept art of the upcoming game, though further details like its official title and launch date remain under wraps for now.

Reintroducing 64-Player Maps and Classic Classes
One of the major changes coming to the new Battlefield game is the return of 64-player maps and the classic class-based system that fans have long enjoyed. In contrast to the ‘Specialist’ system introduced in Battlefield 2042, which was heavily criticized for straying from the franchise’s core gameplay mechanics, EA appears to be bringing back the traditional Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon classes. These classes were hallmarks of earlier Battlefield titles and helped define the tactical, squad-based gameplay that distinguished the series from its competitors.

Looking Back to the Peak of Battlefield
Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn Entertainment and Group General Manager at EA Studios, acknowledged that the new Battlefield title would aim to recapture the magic of Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4. “I mean, if you look back to the peak or the pinnacle of Battlefield, it’s that Battlefield 3… Battlefield 4 era where everything was modern,” Zampella told IGN. EA’s goal is to return to these roots and execute those core elements exceptionally well, with hopes that this approach will win back the player base.

Challenges Ahead for EA’s Battlefield Revival
Although the return to a modern setting and the reintroduction of 64-player maps and classes are steps in the right direction, EA faces significant challenges in reviving the Battlefield brand after the lukewarm reception of Battlefield 2042. The latest game was hampered by technical issues, gameplay changes that alienated long-time fans, and a lack of content at launch. EA will need to focus on delivering a polished and engaging experience if it wants to regain its standing in the highly competitive shooter market.

Anticipation Builds for the Battlefield Series’ Future
As more details emerge about the next Battlefield game, anticipation is building among the franchise’s fanbase. EA’s decision to embrace a modern setting and bring back key gameplay features suggests that the company has taken fan feedback seriously and is committed to delivering a Battlefield experience that stays true to its roots. With no official release date yet, fans will be eagerly awaiting additional information and gameplay reveals in the months ahead. Whether this next installment can bring Battlefield back to its former glory remains to be seen.
