eBay Reportedly Trims Web3 Team Amid Potential Exit from NFT Sector
eBay’s KnownOrigin Acquisition: An Early Move into the NFT Space
eBay, a prominent player in the US e-commerce landscape, appears to be reconsidering its involvement in the NFT (Non-Fungible Token) space. Recent reports suggest that the company has downsized its Web3 team by approximately 30 percent. While the precise motives behind eBay’s decision remain undisclosed, internal dynamics and potential conflicts seem to have surfaced, particularly concerning its acquisition of KnownOrigin, an NFT marketplace, back in 2022.
The acquisition of KnownOrigin by eBay was seen as a strategic move aimed at solidifying its position in the burgeoning NFT market. However, recent developments indicate a divergence from this trajectory. Reports indicate that key figures within eBay, including Stef Jay, the company’s business and strategy officer, and David Moore, one of the founders of KnownOrigin, have either resigned or distanced themselves from the organization in recent weeks. Such departures hint at underlying tensions and potential discord within eBay’s NFT endeavors.
Following the acquisition, eBay assimilated the team behind KnownOrigin with the intention of leveraging their expertise and existing partnerships to expand eBay’s presence in the NFT ecosystem. However, over the course of the past eighteen months, purported strains between the eBay team and the former KnownOrigin team have escalated. Details of these internal conflicts remain undisclosed, yet they underscore the complexities involved in navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of digital assets and decentralized technologies.
“Many within the company are unhappy, blaming the lack of leadership and strategy for the layoffs. There are internal criticisms, even at senior levels, questioning the qualifications of the current head of Web3 as well as eBay’s strategy team,” the report quoted the source as saying. In what seems like an internal communication, Moore informed his teammates that he has been impacted by the latest round of proposed redundancies in the company.
“Witnessing that level of layoffs within the team was brutal,” Moore said in his message – a screenshot of which has been published as part of the report by the NFTGators.
As of now, eBay has not addressed the situation. It remains unclear if these layoffs by eBay are part of an internal restructuring. Afterall, the overall NFT market recorded an all-time low in sales in 2023.
Members of the KnownOrigin team have also not addressed the situation on any public domain as of now. eBay is planning to lay off a thousand more employees. This information was circulated to the eBay team by CEO Jamie Iannone in January.
“The most significant and toughest of these decisions is to reduce our current workforce by approximately 1,000 roles or an estimated nine percent of full-time employees. Additionally, we plan to scale back the number of contracts we have within our alternate workforce over the coming months,” the official note had said at the time.
