eBay Cuts Workforce by 6%

eBay has announced plans to reduce its global workforce by approximately 6% as part of a broader effort to streamline operations and realign resources.

The move will affect around 800 roles and is aimed at improving efficiency while supporting the company’s evolving strategic direction. Leadership indicated that restructuring is intended to better position the business for long-term priorities.

The layoffs follow recent investments in growth areas, including secondhand fashion platforms that appeal to younger consumers.

This marks the third workforce reduction since 2023, reflecting continued adjustments in response to shifting consumer behavior and operational needs.

The decision highlights ongoing transformation across the e-commerce sector as companies adapt to changing market dynamics.

eBay Acquires Depop to Strengthen Resale Fashion

eBay has forecast stronger-than-expected first-quarter revenue while announcing the acquisition of fashion resale platform Depop from Etsy for approximately $1.2 billion. The move aims to expand eBay’s position in the fast-growing pre-owned fashion segment.

The company expects quarterly revenue between $3 billion and $3.05 billion, surpassing analyst projections of $2.80 billion. This outlook reflects continued growth driven by its focus on recommerce, which emphasizes refurbished, authenticated and second-hand products.

Depop is seen as a strategic addition, particularly due to its popularity among younger consumers who prioritize sustainability and circular consumption. The platform has gained traction in the resale fashion market by promoting the reuse of clothing and accessories.

According to CEO Jamie Iannone, the acquisition aligns with shifting consumer preferences toward environmentally conscious shopping habits. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter and could contribute up to two percentage points to eBay’s gross merchandise volume growth by 2026.

For the first quarter, eBay anticipates total merchandise sales between $21.5 billion and $21.9 billion, exceeding market expectations. The company previously reported $2.97 billion in fourth-quarter revenue, alongside a 10 percent increase in merchandise volume.

Meta to Test Integration of eBay Listings on Facebook Marketplace

Meta announced on Wednesday that it would begin testing a new feature that integrates eBay listings into Facebook Marketplace, initially in Germany, France, and the United States. This initiative allows buyers to browse eBay listings directly on Facebook Marketplace, with transactions being completed through eBay.

The move comes as Meta continues to appeal a significant $840 million fine imposed by the European Commission in November over alleged anti-competitive practices related to Facebook Marketplace. Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Meta confirmed it is actively working to address the concerns raised by the Commission.

Meta emphasized that this new collaboration would benefit both eBay sellers, who would gain exposure to Facebook’s large user base, and Marketplace users, who would have access to a wider range of products from the eBay community.
