Amazon discontinues its Astro for Business security robot after just 7 months
Amazon has decided to discontinue its Astro for Business device, a security robot tailored for small and medium-sized businesses, just seven months after its launch. The decision, communicated via email to customers and employees on Wednesday, cites Amazon’s intention to refocus efforts on its home version of Astro. Launched in 2021, the home version of Astro offers a range of functionalities including home security, pet detection, message delivery, and a cargo bin capable of carrying up to 4.4 pounds.
An Amazon spokesperson emphasized their commitment to enhancing Astro’s capabilities for home use, stating, “We are fully committed to our vision of bringing world-class consumer robotics solutions to the home.” To prioritize these developments, Amazon will cease support for Astro for Business, with the robots scheduled to stop functioning from September 25. They encourage customers to recycle the devices through Amazon’s recycling program, which covers shipping costs.
While Amazon did not disclose specific figures regarding impacted business customers, the discontinuation reflects a strategic pivot due to insufficient demand to sustain the business-focused robot. The Astro for Business robots were priced at $2,350 and offered three subscription plans, including features like route programming, Ring alarms, motion detectors, and human agent support and monitoring for additional fees.
This move underscores Amazon’s strategic shift to prioritize consumer robotics solutions for the home market, aiming to innovate and enhance the Astro’s functionality in residential settings.
