Amazon Music follows in Spotify’s footsteps with its own AI-powered playlist generator, Maestro

Amazon Music is joining the AI playlist trend with its new feature, Maestro. Currently in beta testing for U.S. customers on iOS and Android, Maestro allows users to generate playlists using spoken or written prompts, including emojis.

Users can input prompts that encompass activities, sounds, emotions, or choose from suggested prompts provided by Amazon. The AI then generates a playlist based on the input, aiming to curate songs that align with the user’s preferences.

However, Amazon acknowledges that Maestro’s AI technology may not always produce accurate results initially, as it’s still in beta. To maintain a positive user experience, the platform has implemented measures to prevent offensive language and inappropriate prompts.

While Maestro presents an innovative approach to playlist creation, its success ultimately depends on the accuracy and relevance of the generated playlists, as well as users’ feedback during the beta testing phase.

Amazon’s Maestro is currently available to a limited audience, targeting a subset of free Amazon Music users, Prime customers, and Unlimited Amazon Music subscribers in the U.S. on iOS and Android platforms. While subscribers will enjoy additional features such as instant playlist listening and saving, Prime members and ad-supported users can only access 30-second song previews before saving playlists.

This tiered access model may encourage users to upgrade to a paid subscription to unlock the full functionality of Maestro, a strategy aligned with the trend of offering premium AI experiences as part of paid offerings. As Amazon continues to refine Maestro and expand its availability, it will be interesting to see how users respond and whether the AI playlist generator becomes a compelling reason to upgrade to a paid subscription.
