Global Rollout: Google Pixel’s Call Screening Feature Set to Expand to India and Other Regions

Localized Convenience: Google Pixel Call Screening Feature to Support Regional Languages in India and Beyond

Google’s Pixel smartphones may soon extend the reach of their valuable call screening feature to additional countries, including India, as revealed by a vigilant user on Reddit. The current functionality, which transcribes calls from unknown or spam numbers, is limited to specific countries and languages. However, there are indications that Google plans to broaden its support to encompass over 10 new languages and regions in the near future. The specific details regarding whether this expanded rollout will include the automatic call screening feature, presently accessible to US users, remain unclear.

The Reddit user, u/Yuval17G, shared insights on how they successfully activated the Google Pixel Call Screening feature on a rooted OnePlus 7 running a custom Android 14 variant, AOSPA (Paranoid Android), alongside the GappsMod root-related module. Following the activation of relevant call screening flags, the user managed to download Hindi language packages, enabling the feature on their device. Screenshots from the user reveal the addition of English (India) and Hindi (India) to the list of supported languages for call screening. This discovery suggests that Google may be gearing up to introduce the feature in India in the coming months. The post also mentions that a friend replicated the process on a Redmi Note 8, though without providing additional details.

The Reddit post further outlines a potential expansion of Pixel Call Screening to other languages and regions, such as English (Singapore), French (Belgium and Switzerland), German (Belgium, Austria, Switzerland), Italian (Switzerland and Italy), Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish (US/EE.UU). It’s essential to note that while the user successfully activated the feature through a rooted device, and the languages were accessible, Google has not made an official announcement regarding the extension of call screening to additional languages and regions. The anticipated update could potentially be part of a future Pixel Feature Drop, with the next one expected in March, promising more details in the weeks to come.

According to screenshots shared by the user, Google appears to have added English (India) and Hindi (India) to the languages supported by the call screening feature. The discovery of previously unsupported languages suggests that the company could be planning on introducing the feature on Pixel smartphones in India in the coming months. The user claims that their friend was also able to enable the feature on a Redmi Note 8, but did not provide additional details.

The post on Reddit also includes a list of other languages and regions where Pixel Call Screening might soon be available. These include English (Singapore), French (Belgium and Switzerland), German (Belgium, Austria, Switzerland), Italian (Switzerland and Italy), Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish (US/ EE.UU).

It’s worth noting that while the user managed to use a rooted smartphone to enable the feature and the languages were available, the company is yet to make an announcement related to the expansion of call screening in other languages and regions. It is likely to arrive in the form of a Pixel Feature Drop — the next one is anticipated to land in March, and we can expect to find out more details in the coming weeks.
