Google has begun rolling out its May 2025 update for Pixel devices, delivering improvements and security fixes across its lineup. This over-the-air (OTA) update is available for the Pixel 9 series, Pixel Tablet, and other older Pixel models running Android 15. The update focuses on resolving several bugs related to audio, Bluetooth connectivity, and the Android framework, alongside bundling the latest security patches.

According to a Google community manager, the update carries build numbers BP1A.250505.005, BP1A.250505.005.B1, and BD4A.250505.003 for global variants. Devices linked with specific carriers, including Taiwan+EMEA, Verizon, and Deutsche Telekom, will receive updates with slightly different identifiers to accommodate carrier-specific tweaks. The update covers a broad range of devices, such as the Pixel 9, Pixel 8, Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold, Pixel 7, and Pixel 6 series.

The changelog highlights several key fixes. One addresses an audio-related issue where microphone recording quality suffered degradation in some apps across the Pixel lineup. Another resolves Bluetooth pairing problems encountered with certain smartwatches, which affected connectivity under particular conditions. Additionally, a bug causing errors when displaying secondary languages in quick settings has been corrected, improving the overall user experience.

Security is also a focus of this release, as the May 2025 patch includes fixes for three high-severity vulnerabilities. These include CVE-2025-27700 affecting the oobconfig component, CVE-2024-56193 found in the Bluetooth subcomponent, and CVE-2025-27701 related to the kernel. By addressing these issues, Google continues to safeguard Pixel users from potential threats while enhancing device stability and performance.

Google is reportedly considering relocating some of its Pixel smartphone production from Vietnam to India, as part of its broader strategy to diversify its supply chain. This move is expected to accelerate Google’s plans to increase manufacturing in India over the next few years. Like other tech giants such as Apple, Google appears to be reacting to recent tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on several countries, including both Vietnam and India. The shift aims to mitigate the impact of these tariffs on its operations.

According to a report from The Economic Times, Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has been in talks with key manufacturing partners in India, including Foxconn and Dixon, to facilitate the transition. As part of this shift, Google is also encouraging its partners to source critical components locally, such as fingerprint scanners, batteries, and chargers, rather than relying on imports. This strategy is aimed at reducing costs and further integrating India into its supply chain network.

Currently, up to 45,000 Google Pixel smartphones are already being manufactured in India each month, though most of these devices are sold within the country. Production in India began in August 2024 with the launch of the Pixel 8, and while Google had already planned to increase local production, recent talks with Foxconn and Dixon suggest the company is now looking to expedite the process. Eventually, Google plans to ship a portion of the Pixel smartphones produced in India to international markets, including the US, following a model similar to Apple’s.

The timing of this move comes as a direct response to US tariffs imposed on China, Vietnam, and India. While the tariffs on most countries, except China, have been paused for 90 days, companies like Google are looking for ways to protect themselves from the long-term impact of these trade policies. Shifting production to India could help Google avoid some of these duties while also boosting its manufacturing capacity in a rapidly growing market.

Gboard Introduces New Toolbar and Enhanced Voice Typing Features for Pixel and Select Devices

While Gboard has long supported voice typing, the latest update brings several enhancements aimed at improving the overall experience, particularly when users are unable to use their hands to type. With these new features, Gboard expands the functionality of voice typing, enabling users to perform a wider variety of actions using just their voice.

One of the key improvements is the addition of a new toolbar for voice typing on Pixel devices. Previously, when voice typing was activated, the Gboard keyboard would remain visible on the screen, allowing users to edit text as they dictated. However, with the new update, the voice typing toolbar is now minimized and appears as a pill-shaped icon at the bottom of the screen when activated. This change frees up more space for the user to interact with the text, offering a cleaner and more intuitive experience while dictating messages.

Additionally, the new toolbar includes a hamburger menu on the left side that provides quick access to various dictation tools. One of the standout features is the “Show voice commands” option, which displays a list of available voice commands users can issue. For example, users can say “Send” to send a message, “Stop” to turn off the microphone, and “Delete” to remove the last word or highlighted word. There are also commands for clearing the last sentence or all of the text, as well as an “Undo” command to reverse the last action. These voice commands make it easier for users to manage their text hands-free.

Moreover, Gboard now allows users to insert emojis using voice descriptions. For instance, users can simply say the name of an emoji, like “smiling face with heart eyes,” and it will be added to their message. This new feature not only streamlines the typing process but also provides a fun and efficient way to personalize messages without needing to touch the screen. With these updates, Gboard’s voice typing feature becomes even more versatile, offering Pixel users and others a powerful tool for hands-free communication.
