Google Gemini: Here’s everything you need to know about the new generative AI platform

Google, once again demonstrating its branding challenges, initially failed to clarify that Gemini is distinct from the Gemini apps available on the web and mobile (previously known as Bard).

The Gemini apps serve as clients connecting to different Gemini models—currently Gemini Ultra (with Gemini Advanced, detailed below) and Gemini Pro—providing chatbot-like interfaces. These apps essentially act as front ends for Google’s generative AI, similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude family of apps.

Google Gemini mobile app

Gemini on the web resides at its designated location. On Android, the Gemini app supplants the former Google Assistant app. For iOS users, both the Google app and Google Search app function as Gemini clients.

Gemini apps are versatile, capable of processing voice commands, text inputs, and images—incorporating files such as PDFs and, soon, videos, either uploaded or imported from Google Drive. Conversations initiated with Gemini apps on mobile seamlessly transition to Gemini on the web and vice versa, provided you’re signed in to the same Google Account across both platforms.
