Sony announced that Helldivers 2 far “exceeded expectations,” selling 12 million units in the first 12 weeks since its release. This live-service shooter is now PlayStation’s fastest-selling title of all time, surpassing the previous record set by God of War Ragnarok within the same period after its November 2022 launch. Sony shared these updates during its earnings call on Tuesday, highlighting the game’s exceptional performance.

The impressive sales numbers for Helldivers 2 include copies sold on both PlayStation 5 and PC. Released on February 8, the online co-op shooter from Arrowhead Games Studios quickly became a surprise hit on both platforms. By May 5, 2024, Helldivers 2 had sold 12 million copies, earning the title of the most successful PlayStation game launch ever. Previously, this record was held by Santa Monica Studio’s God of War Ragnarok, which sold 11 million copies in its first 10 weeks.

In addition to game sales, Sony reported strong PS5 unit sales, reaching a record 20.8 million in fiscal year 2023, which ended on March 31, 2024. This figure was just shy of Sony’s revised target of 21 million for the year. Since its launch in November 2020, the PS5 has sold 59.2 million units, nearly matching the PS4’s 60 million units sold within the same post-launch period.

Despite this success, Sony anticipates a decline in PS5 sales for the upcoming fiscal year. The company forecasts the console to sell approximately 18 million units in fiscal year 2024.
