Meta updates its label from ‘Made with AI’ to ‘AI info’ to indicate the use of AI in photos
Meta, responding to user feedback and confusion, has decided to update its photo tagging feature from “Made with AI” to “AI info” across all its apps. This change comes after photographers and users expressed concerns that the previous label was misleading, as it sometimes applied to photos that had undergone basic edits using AI-powered tools rather than being entirely AI-generated.
Meta acknowledged that the previous label did not effectively convey that the tagged image might not have been created solely with AI but could have used AI-enhanced editing tools such as retouching. The company stated in an updated blog post that they, like others in the industry, recognized the need for clearer and more accurate labeling that aligns better with user expectations and provides adequate context.
This adjustment aims to offer users a clearer understanding that the “AI info” tag indicates the presence of AI-related tools or processes in the creation or editing of the image, rather than solely AI-generated content.
Meta’s decision to change the photo tagging label from “Made with AI” to “AI Info” does not alter the underlying technology used to detect the use of AI in photos and apply these labels. The company continues to rely on technical metadata standards such as C2PA and IPTC, which include information about the use of AI tools in photo creation or editing.
This means that if photographers utilize tools like Adobe’s Generative AI Fill to edit their photos, these photos may still receive the new “AI Info” label. Meta’s goal with this label update is to clarify that the presence of AI in the creation or modification process of an image does not necessarily mean the image was entirely generated by AI alone.
Kate McLaughlin, a spokesperson from Meta, emphasized that “AI Info” encompasses content that was either made or modified with AI, aligning more closely with users’ expectations. Meta intends to collaborate with other companies in the industry to enhance this labeling process further.
This adjustment aims to provide users with clearer information about the role of AI in the content they encounter on Meta’s platforms, addressing concerns raised by photographers and users regarding the previous labeling system.
