OpenAI acquires Rockset to enhance its capabilities in enterprise AI
OpenAI has acquired Rockset, a company specializing in real-time search and data analytics tools. In an announcement on its official blog, OpenAI revealed plans to integrate Rockset’s technology across its product infrastructure. The acquisition will involve members of Rockset’s team joining OpenAI, while existing Rockset customers will transition gradually off the platform.
Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Rockset, founded in 2016 by former Facebook engineers Venkat Venkataramani and Tudor Bosman, along with database architect Dhruba Borthakur, developed tools enabling automatic ingestion of data from databases and cloud storage. These tools indexed data for applications such as recommendation engines, logistics-tracking dashboards, and chatbots in fintech and e-commerce sectors.
Prior to the acquisition, Rockset had raised significant capital, totaling over $117.5 million from investors like Icon Ventures, Sequoia, and Greylock. Its clientele included notable names such as Meta and JetBlue, utilizing Rockset for applications like flight delay predictions.
OpenAI’s COO Brad Lightcap expressed excitement about integrating Rockset’s capabilities into OpenAI’s products, aiming to empower customers with enhanced data leverage and real-time information access. The acquisition hints at potential advancements in grounding OpenAI’s models with real-world data, potentially refining model accuracy and applicability across various business scenarios.
