Upcoming Feature: Google May Introduce ‘Satellite SOS’ Functionality for Pixel Phones

Emergency Connectivity: Satellite SOS Feature to Enable Pixel Users to Reach Emergency Services Without Cellular or Wi-Fi

Following in Apple’s footsteps, Google appears to be gearing up to introduce satellite connectivity functionality to its Pixel lineup, offering users an additional layer of emergency communication capability. Apple first introduced this feature with the iPhone 14 in 2022, enabling users to reach emergency services even in scenarios where traditional cellular or Wi-Fi networks are unavailable. Now, recent developments suggest that Google is poised to follow suit, with indications emerging of the “Satellite SOS” feature making its debut on Pixel phones. Notably, a recent update to the “Adaptive Connectivity Services” app has unveiled the presence of this advanced functionality, sparking anticipation among Pixel users.

Reports from multiple Pixel phone users indicate the emergence of the “Satellite SOS” option within the Settings app, nestled within the Safety & emergency section alongside existing emergency features such as Emergency SOS and Car Crash Detection. Despite its presence, tapping on the Satellite SOS feature currently yields no discernible action, leaving users intrigued about its impending functionality. An investigation by Gadgets360 confirmed the existence of this new option, underscoring the potential significance of this upcoming feature for Pixel users.

As Pixel users await further developments, the emergence of the Satellite SOS feature underscores Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance the safety and emergency capabilities of its smartphone lineup. By incorporating satellite connectivity, Google aims to provide users with a reliable means of accessing emergency services in critical situations, irrespective of network availability. As the tech giant continues to refine and expand the feature’s functionality, Pixel users can anticipate enhanced peace of mind and security, knowing that help is just a touch away, even in the most challenging circumstances.

The new version (p.2024.08) of the Adaptive Connectivity Services app seems to have added support to the new feature. The Satellite SOS functionality would allow Pixel users to send messages to emergency services over satellites while unable to connect to a cellular connection or Wi-Fi. It will help users send their status or location via Google Maps during natural disasters and wilderness adventures.

As reported by 9to5Google, the disclaimer of the Satellite SOS feature states that when you connect with emergency services via satellite, your name, email, phone number, location, device information, and emergency contacts will be shared with emergency services and satellite service providers. The screens relating to the Satellite SOS feature reportedly include links to the Garmin Search and Rescue insurance plan. There is reportedly a list of supported countries as well.

Although the description on the Satellite SOS page indicates “your Pixel,” Google is expected to roll out the upcoming feature to other flagship Android devices.

Apple introduced satellite connectivity with the iPhone 14. This service was exclusive to the US and Canada initially and Apple expanded its availability to more countries last year. The Emergency SOS collect details about their situation and then transmits the data to the relay centre and emergency services.
