Two images from the James Webb Space Telescope can show the same region of space and look remarkably different. One may emphasize stars, while another gives greater prominence to surrounding material.

That difference does not mean one image is more authentic. Observations at different wavelengths capture different information, and Webb’s instruments are designed to investigate those differences.

Understanding the wavelength range and image-processing description makes a published view more informative.

Infrared changes what can be observed

NASA explains that near-infrared light is less hindered by small dust particles than visible light. This allows observations of processes inside dusty regions where stars and planets form. Mid-infrared observations also reveal emission associated with cooler material.

This does not mean infrared simply removes every obstruction. It provides another way to investigate a region, with different strengths and limitations.

A useful comparison is reading several measurements of the same landscape. One measurement may describe elevation, another vegetation, and another temperature. Each contributes information that the others do not contain.

Astronomical wavelength comparisons similarly help researchers distinguish physical processes rather than merely produce alternative visual styles.

The instrument determines the available information

Webb has four scientific instruments with different capabilities. NASA describes NIRCam, NIRSpec, and NIRISS as observing visible-red to near-infrared wavelengths, while MIRI observes longer mid-infrared wavelengths. Each observing mode covers only part of the observatory’s total capabilities.

The instrument name in an image caption is therefore important.

A NIRCam image and a MIRI image of the same target may highlight different features because they sample different wavelength ranges. A spectroscopic observation provides another kind of information by separating light according to wavelength.

The research question helps determine which instrument and mode are appropriate.

Visible colors represent measured information

Human eyes cannot directly see most of the infrared wavelengths Webb records. Published color images therefore use visible colors to represent data collected through selected filters.

NASA’s image-processing explanation describes assigning colors to filter images and combining near- and mid-infrared observations in different ways to communicate the science.

This process should be understood through the accompanying color key. A red feature in a published composite does not automatically carry the same meaning as a red object viewed directly with human eyes.

Nor should the same visible color be assumed to mean exactly the same thing across unrelated composites. The filter assignments and processing description provide the necessary context.

Read the caption as part of the observation

When comparing two Webb views, identify the target, instruments, filters, and scale. Check whether the images cover the same area and whether they were prepared for the same scientific purpose.

Then ask which structures become more or less prominent. The answer may reveal a difference in the material or radiation being traced.

Avoid drawing a physical conclusion solely from a striking color. An image can suggest a question, while the measurement details and scientific analysis establish what the observation supports.

Webb’s power comes partly from these complementary views. Learning to read them together turns a beautiful image into a more meaningful account of how the universe is being measured.
