WhatsApp is introducing filters to simplify the process of locating messages.
WhatsApp users who treat the app more like an inbox will find the platform even more useful with the introduction of new chat filters. These filters, announced by WhatsApp on Tuesday, include “All,” “Unread,” and “Groups.”
The default “All” filter provides users with an unfiltered view of their inbox, while the “Unread” filter allows for easy access to messages that may have gone unnoticed. This filter also assists users in achieving inbox zero by clearing unread message indicators.
Although WhatsApp previously offered a way to view unread messages through a search bar filter, the new filter bubbles on the chat screen make this option more readily accessible.
The introduction of the “Groups” filter addresses a common user request for quickly navigating through group chats. This filter also includes conversations from subgroups within Communities, WhatsApp’s feature for discussion groups.
The concept of filter bubbles may seem familiar to Gmail users, as Google’s email service introduced a similar feature in 2020 to simplify search functionality.
While this initial set of filters is a significant addition, WhatsApp may expand its filter options in the future. Reports from WABetaInfo suggest that WhatsApp has been developing additional filters, such as “Contacts” to filter messages from unknown senders and businesses, “Favorites” for frequently contacted individuals, and even custom chat filters, which have appeared in various beta versions of the app.
