Zomato Launches Weather Union: A Community-Driven Real-Time Weather Monitoring System

Zomato CEO Announces Weather Union API Free for Institutions and Businesses

Zomato unveiled a crowd-supported real-time weather monitoring infrastructure on Wednesday, introducing it as “Weather Union.” The company emphasized that this system is the first-of-its-kind in India and represents the largest private infrastructure in its field within the country. Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal announced that the platform’s API would be free for all institutions and companies, aiming to benefit the economy at large. The food delivery giant is also calling for volunteers to offer space on their premises for installing additional weather monitoring stations to further expand the project.

Goyal revealed Weather Union in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), noting that over 650 on-ground weather stations have already been installed and are operational. These stations provide real-time data on various weather parameters, including temperature, rain intensity, total rainfall, humidity, wind speed, and direction, among others.

The initiative is set to revolutionize how weather data is collected and utilized in India. By involving the community and leveraging crowd-supported infrastructure, Zomato aims to create a more accurate and comprehensive weather monitoring system.

Institutions and businesses will benefit significantly from free access to this real-time weather data. This accessibility will enable better decision-making processes across various sectors, from agriculture to logistics, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and safety.

Volunteers who host weather stations will play a crucial role in the success and expansion of Weather Union. Their participation will help create a dense network of monitoring points, ensuring more localized and accurate weather data collection.

Overall, Zomato’s Weather Union represents a significant advancement in India’s weather monitoring capabilities. By combining cutting-edge technology with community support, Zomato is poised to make a substantial impact on both economic activities and everyday life in India.

Further, Goyal highlighted that to set up the first phase of the weather monitoring system, it had to take the help of many Zomato employees who installed the on-ground weather stations at their premises. However, intending to expand the project, the company is seeking more volunteers who can offer the same. A volunteering form has been added to the Weather Union website.
