Enhanced App Archiving: Android 15 Feature Preserves User Data for Seamless Restoration

Even as the launch of Android 15 looms on the horizon, exciting new features continue to surface, offering users a glimpse into the future of the operating system. One such feature generating buzz is the ability to archive apps, a functionality aimed at optimizing storage space on smartphones without resorting to complete uninstallation. Presently, this app archiving feature is confined to apps downloaded from the Google Play Store, lacking manual control and support for apps sourced from alternative marketplaces. However, with the promise of an operating system-level implementation through Android 15, users stand to benefit from enhanced flexibility and convenience.

Recently uncovered by Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority within the code strings of the Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 update, the archive and restore options hint at an imminent evolution in app management. Rahman’s ingenious experimentation involved activating these nascent features, bypassing official implementation protocols. In doing so, he not only showcased the functionality’s potential but also unearthed its seamless integration with existing user data, mitigating concerns of data loss or inconvenience during the archiving process.

In a revealing trial, Rahman opted to archive his Uber app, a storage-hungry behemoth consuming a substantial 387MB of precious space. With a few taps, he initiated the archiving process, witnessing a dramatic reduction in app size to a mere 17.64MB, accompanied by the emergence of a distinctive cloud icon atop the app’s iconography. Subsequent attempts to access the app triggered a swift download and installation sequence, culminating in the restoration of his user account and associated data without requiring any manual intervention or login credentials.

This groundbreaking experiment underscores the potential transformative impact of Android 15’s app archiving feature, offering users a sophisticated solution to streamline their digital experiences and optimize device performance. With the promise of seamless integration and data preservation, this feature heralds a new era of efficiency and convenience, poised to redefine app management paradigms for Android enthusiasts worldwide.

Android 15 is still months away, but one of its new features has recently surfaced. Reportedly, users will be able to archive an app to save space on their smartphone, instead of completely uninstalling it. This app archiving feature is currently available in Google Play Store, for apps downloaded through the marketplace. However, there is no manual control, and apps downloaded from other app marketplaces do not support it. This is why an operating system-level feature via Android 15 could be much more useful.

Spotted by Mishaal Rahman writing for Android Authority, the strings of codes for this feature were discovered in the Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 update which was released recently. Rahman was able to find “archive” and “restore” options and activate them, allowing him to use the feature even when it was officially not added. He, then, attempted to archive and restore an app and found that the feature automatically stored all the user data. Users will reportedly not have to sign in or fear losing any of the in-app data by archiving them.

In his experiment, Rahman archived his Uber app, which occupied 387MB of storage. After archiving it, the app size was reduced to just 17.64MB. A cloud icon also appeared on top of the app icon. Clicking on the app again began the downloading and installing process. Once it was installed, the cloud icon disappeared. Surprisingly, opening the app showed that his account was already logged in and all the saved locations were also present.
