A faint channel logo remains after changing programs. A phone briefly shows the outline of a previous screen. A monitor displays an unexpected patch, and the owner immediately searches for a universal burn-in fix.
These observations deserve investigation, but they do not all establish the same problem.
OLED care works best when the symptom, viewing conditions, and manufacturer’s maintenance process are considered separately.
Understand temporary persistence and lasting change
OLED displays produce light at individual pixels. Apple explains that its OLED displays can exhibit image persistence or burn-in after extended use.
Its documentation distinguishes temporary persistence, which can disappear after normal use, from more extreme cases associated with displaying the same high-contrast image at high brightness for prolonged periods. Apple also describes automatic brightness and display-management measures intended to reduce these effects.
That distinction matters when describing a fault. “I can see a faint outline immediately after closing an app” provides different evidence from “the same outline remains across unrelated content over time.”
Record what happens before applying several changes at once.
Observe the screen under normal conditions
Start with ordinary content from another source or application. Note whether the artifact remains in the same physical position, appears only in one input, or changes with the content.
This is a practical diagnostic sequence, not a definitive remote diagnosis. Its value is that it produces a clearer description for support.
A useful report includes the device model, approximate circumstances, brightness behavior, and whether the effect persists after normal use. A photograph may help document the issue, although it should not replace a description of what is visible in person.
Avoid drawing a conclusion solely from an unusually demanding test pattern that does not resemble the way the device is used.
Follow the maintenance process for the model
Manufacturers provide different OLED care systems. LG documents Pixel Cleaning or Pixel Refresher options on supported televisions, with menu paths varying by webOS version.
The procedure also depends on power availability. LG warns that pixel cleaning cannot run if the television is unplugged or power is cut at the power strip when the set is shut down.
This makes a common habit relevant: switching off a television at the wall immediately after use can interfere with a maintenance operation that requires standby power.
Follow the instructions for the exact model. A procedure demonstrated for a television should not be assumed to apply to a phone or a computer monitor.
Know when to stop experimenting
LG’s troubleshooting guidance directs users toward service if the issue persists after the prescribed cleaning process. It does not establish that every visible artifact can be removed through repeated manual cleaning.
If a maintenance cycle is recommended, let it complete as instructed and then reassess. Repeating random settings changes makes it harder to determine what helped.
For ongoing use, consider whether the display spends long periods showing the same bright interface. A reception screen, static dashboard, and mixed television viewing create different operating patterns.
The goal is to use the device appropriately, allow its intended care features to operate, and recognize when a persistent symptom needs professional assessment. Clear observations are more useful than treating every faint image as the same failure.
