Activision Investigates Malware Targeting Game Players, Stealing Passwords
Activision, a major player in the video game industry, is currently investigating a hacking campaign aimed at stealing players’ credentials. The specific objectives of the hackers remain unclear, but they are primarily focused on obtaining passwords for various accounts, including gaming and cryptocurrency wallets.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the hackers are deploying malware onto victims’ computers, allowing them to steal passwords and gain unauthorized access to sensitive accounts. Activision Blizzard is actively investigating these incidents, with efforts focused on removing the malware and identifying and addressing compromised player accounts.
The method by which the malware is spreading is not yet fully understood, although it is speculated that it may be targeting individuals with third-party tools installed on their systems. As investigations continue, Activision is working to mitigate the impact of the campaign and safeguard the security of its players’ accounts.
Activision spokesperson Delaney Simmons informed TechCrunch that the company is aware of claims suggesting that player credentials within the broader industry may be compromised due to malware obtained from downloading or using unauthorized software. However, Simmons emphasized that Activision’s servers remain secure and uncompromised.
Contrary to earlier reports, Activision denies involvement in removing the malware. According to a spokesperson, the issue lies with third-party software vendors and is not related to Activision’s own software or platforms.
