Google Pay to Introduce SoundPod Audio Alerts for Merchants in India Following Successful Year-Long Trial
Google’s SoundPod Aims to Rival Competitors’ Soundboxes like PhonePe and Paytm
Google’s latest move to introduce the SoundPod comes as part of its broader strategy to enhance payment experiences for small merchants in India. With the SoundPod, Google aims to streamline the payment verification process over the UPI system, offering merchants a convenient and efficient solution for accepting payments. This initiative aligns with Google’s ongoing efforts to expand its presence in India’s rapidly growing digital payment landscape, where competition among tech giants like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm continues to intensify.
The SoundPod’s rollout follows a year-long pilot phase during which Google gathered feedback from participating merchants to refine the device’s functionality and usability. Positive responses received during the trial period underscore the potential of the SoundPod to facilitate faster and more seamless checkouts, ultimately enhancing the overall payment experience for both merchants and customers. By leveraging technology innovations like the SoundPod, Google seeks to empower small businesses and contribute to the digitization of India’s economy.
In addition to offering payment verification capabilities, the SoundPod also serves as a strategic tool for Google to strengthen its competitive position against rivals like PhonePe and Paytm, both of which already provide similar solutions to merchants.
As the digital payment landscape in India continues to evolve, Google’s SoundPod represents a key investment in advancing its payment ecosystem and solidifying its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing markets for digital payments.
Paytm’s ‘Soundbox’ speakers offer between four to 12 days of battery life and feature 2G or 4G connectivity — two models are equipped with LCD screens, while another supports music playback over a Bluetooth connection. On the other hand, PhonePe’s SmartSpeaker offers up to four days of battery like on a single charge and supports multiple languages.
While the company hasn’t offered a concrete timeline for the arrival of the SoundPod in India, rivals like Paytm and PhonePe offer similar audio devices that are already in use by merchants across the country. Merchants also pay a monthly subscription — between Rs. 50 to Rs. 125 — to access these audio-based announcement service.
