Mark Gurman Reveals Details: Next-Gen AirPods (4th Gen) Set for Redesigned Look, Enhanced Case, and ANC Features

In 2024, Apple is anticipated to unveil its forthcoming iteration of truly wireless stereo (TWS) earphones, aiming to succeed the AirPods (3rd Generation) earbuds released in October 2021. The tech giant is poised to implement substantial upgrades, reportedly encompassing notable design modifications for the purported fourth generation of Apple AirPods. Recent speculations hint at Apple’s intention to introduce two distinct versions of the AirPods (4th Generation) at varying price points. Analyst Mark Gurman sheds light on the company’s probable strategy to execute a comprehensive revamp of its existing TWS earbuds lineup.

In his latest weekly newsletter, Power On, Gurman explains that Apple is in a bit of a pickle with its range of AirPods. There is very little difference, save the design, between the AirPods (2nd Generation) which are priced at Rs. 12,900, and AirPods (3rd Generation), which start at Rs. 19,900. Customers, therefore, more often than not opt for the cheaper option, costing the company money.

Gurman notes that Apple plans to mitigate this issue by launching two new fourth-generation non-Pro AirPods models. The earbuds are expected to get new designs, revamped cases, and USB Type-C charging support. The higher-end version of the two models is also expected to include active noise cancellation (ANC), which is currently only offered on the AirPods Pro and Max models.

According to Gurman’s insights, the anticipated launch of the fourth generation AirPods might prompt the discontinuation of the existing second and third-generation models. Expectations include a redesign featuring shorter stems and USB Type-C charging support for their cases. Encompassing enhanced audio quality and an updated design, these earbuds are anticipated to offer an improved and more secure fit, although the inclusion of silicone ear tips remains uncertain.

Reports also suggest that the redesigned case for the fourth-gen AirPods may integrate speakers for Find My alerts. The slated release for these new earbuds is speculated to align with Apple’s potential unveiling of its new series of iPhone models around September 2024. Additionally, Gurman hints at a probable refresh for the AirPods Max headphones, primarily focusing on new color variants and the integration of a USB Type-C port rather than significant hardware or software upgrades.

Furthermore, earlier rumors hint at the potential introduction of a new model of AirPods Max in 2025, adding to Apple’s line of audio accessories.
