Preview of Massive Windows 11 2024 Update Packed with New Features
Late in the month, Microsoft has released the long-promised optional update for Windows 11 version 24H2. Patch KB5040529 upgrades the operating system to build version 26100.1297, bringing numerous features that testers have eagerly awaited.
This update includes improvements to the lock screen, Start menu, and File Explorer. Microsoft has also revamped widgets, emojis, and the Task Manager. The future of Windows 11 looks brighter than ever.
Currently, this update is only available to Insiders in the Release Preview Channel. However, everyone will gain access to 24H2 when it is officially released in the fall. Here’s a look at what to expect:
Lock Screen Personalization
One significant change is the redesigned lock screen. Previously, a non-customizable Weather widget on the lock screen frustrated many users. Now, widgets can be personalized in the settings under Personalization.
You can choose to display additional information such as weather, traffic, sports, or finances on your lock screen. If you prefer a clean look, you can deactivate this feature entirely.
Start Menu and Taskbar Changes
The Start menu has been revised, featuring a new account manager section that provides an overview of your Microsoft account benefits and quick access to account settings.
You can now pin apps to the Taskbar again. Although this was possible in previous versions of Windows, Windows 11 initially lacked this feature. You can now simply drag applications from the Start menu to the Taskbar to pin them.
The widget icons in the Taskbar have also been updated with more detailed and animated icons. These are small but important enhancements.
Task Manager Gets a Major Upgrade
The Task Manager has received a significant overhaul. Post-update, it displays the performance of the working memory in MHz to MT/s, providing a more accurate indication of memory usage.
Additionally, the Task Manager window size is now easier to adjust, and accessibility has been improved with better text scaling. A known issue preventing safe removal of USB devices while the Task Manager was open has been fixed.
Improved Security
To enhance account security, users can now enter an email address to restore their accounts, with a new button available for this feature. This function was previously tested in beta versions of Windows 11.
Options to save sound settings and back them up for future restoration are also included, along with an overview of linked devices from other versions (see update KB5037853 for Windows 11).
Other Notable New Features
In File Explorer, users can drag files between breadcrumbs in the address bar, speeding up navigation.
The Windows sharing window has been revised, now featuring the option to create QR codes for sharing files directly. Users can also send emails to themselves and copy files directly from the sharing window.
Windows 11 now supports the new 15.1 emoji standard, which includes new symbols and improved display.
These features are planned for Windows 11 version 24H2 but are subject to change before the official release. The update process itself is also being revamped to be faster and more intelligent.
Preparing for the Update
Before installing the update, be aware that Windows 11 version 24H2 will remove several apps and features. Review which items might be discontinued to avoid disruptions.
Ensure a smooth transition by backing up your data, checking app compatibility, and staying informed about the changes and removals in the update. With these preparations, you can take full advantage of the new features and improvements in Windows 11 version 24H2.
