Tesla Wins UK Supreme Court Ruling to Revive 5G Patent Licensing Case

Tesla has secured a significant legal victory in the United Kingdom after the UK Supreme Court ruled that the electric vehicle manufacturer can revive its lawsuit seeking fair licensing terms for essential 5G wireless patents ahead of the introduction of its next-generation connected vehicles in the British market.

The dispute centers on patents owned by InterDigital and licensed through Avanci, a patent licensing platform that manages intellectual property from multiple companies for use in connected automotive technologies.

Tesla originally filed the case in London’s High Court in 2023, asking the court to determine Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) licensing terms for the use of standard-essential patents required to enable 5G connectivity in its vehicles.

FRAND licensing principles are designed to ensure that companies developing products based on widely adopted technology standards—such as 5G, Wi-Fi, or video compression—can access essential patents under commercially reasonable conditions while ensuring patent holders receive fair compensation.

The High Court initially dismissed Tesla’s request to establish licensing terms, and a subsequent appeal was also unsuccessful. However, the UK’s highest court overturned those earlier decisions, concluding that participation in a patent licensing pool does not remove a patent owner’s obligation to license essential technologies on FRAND terms.

As a result, the case will now return to the High Court, where judges are expected to consider whether Tesla is entitled to the licensing framework it has requested.

The outcome could have broader implications for the automotive industry as connected vehicles become increasingly dependent on standardized wireless communication technologies. Modern electric vehicles rely on high-speed cellular connectivity for software updates, real-time navigation, advanced driver assistance systems, fleet management, remote diagnostics, and future autonomous driving capabilities.

The case also highlights the growing importance of intellectual property in the era of software-defined vehicles. As automobiles evolve into highly connected computing platforms, disputes over wireless communication patents are becoming increasingly significant for manufacturers entering global markets.

For Tesla, securing predictable licensing terms is particularly important as the company expands connected vehicle services and prepares future models with increasingly advanced communication capabilities.

The ruling may also influence how courts interpret FRAND obligations for patent pools and licensing platforms in future disputes involving emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, connected infrastructure, and next-generation telecommunications standards.

While the legal proceedings remain ongoing, the Supreme Court’s decision reinforces the role of judicial oversight in balancing the rights of patent holders with the need to maintain fair access to technologies that underpin modern digital ecosystems.

Volvo and Daimler Launch Software Joint Venture ‘Coretura’ to Cut Costs and Supplier Reliance

European truck giants AB Volvo and Daimler Truck have announced the launch of a joint venture named Coretura, aimed at developing a software-defined vehicle platform to lower costs and reduce their heavy reliance on external suppliers.

The move comes as the truck industry—like the broader automotive sector—races to deliver more technology-integrated vehicles while facing mounting pressure to improve cost-efficiency and production timelines.

Currently, truck manufacturers are dependent on suppliers because vehicle software is tightly integrated with hardware. Coretura’s goal is to break that link and offer an industry-wide standard platform that truckmakers can build upon more independently.

“We’re very much dependent on suppliers, which drives both cost and sometimes delays,” said Daimler Trucks CEO Karin Radstrom. “We’re now exploring the next generation of software we need for vehicles.”

The joint venture will be based in Gothenburg, Sweden, and will initially employ 50 staff. The first deliveries of the connectivity platform are targeted for 2027, with broader implementation expected by the end of the decade.

Coretura will be led by Johan Lunden, a veteran from Volvo, who emphasized that software will be critical to achieving future goals for sustainability, safety, and productivity in commercial transportation.

Despite being long-time rivals, Volvo and Daimler have previously partnered on initiatives such as hydrogen fuel cell technology and vehicle charging infrastructure.
