Red Sea Cable Cuts Disrupt Internet Across Asia and Middle East

Internet services across Asia and the Middle East were disrupted after multiple subsea cable cuts in the Red Sea, according to monitoring group NetBlocks. Connectivity issues have hit users in India, Pakistan, and the UAE, with outages observed on the networks of Etisalat and Du.

The cause of the damage remains unclear, though failures were identified near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, a key junction for undersea fiber routes linking Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Microsoft confirmed that its Azure cloud services were affected by the outages, warning users of increased latency. While traffic has been rerouted via alternative paths to prevent full service interruptions, Microsoft said some customers may still experience delays on routes previously running through the Middle East.

Azure is the world’s second-largest cloud provider after Amazon Web Services (AWS), making such disruptions significant for global enterprises. Experts note that the incident underscores the fragility of subsea cable infrastructure, which carries more than 95% of international internet traffic and is increasingly exposed to both accidents and geopolitical tensions.

Bell Canada Restores Internet Service After Two-Hour Outage in Quebec and Ontario

Bell Canada announced on Wednesday that it has fully restored internet services after a technical update issue caused a significant two-hour outage affecting tens of thousands of users in Quebec and Ontario.

The disruption, which began around 9:00 a.m. ET, peaked with more than 130,000 disruption reports, according to real-time outage tracker Downdetector.com. Bell confirmed that service had been completely restored by 11:00 a.m. ET.

“We want to assure our customers and partners that this was a technical issue and we have ruled out a cybersecurity incident as the root cause,” Bell said in an emailed statement.

Cause and Response

The outage stemmed from a software update that affected some of Bell’s router infrastructure. The company responded by rolling back the update, which resolved the issue.

Bell, a unit of BCE Inc., said its network teams are conducting a full review to prevent future disruptions.

Customer Impact and Instructions

Bell serves approximately 4.4 million high-speed internet subscribers, as noted in its latest quarterly report. The full scale of the outage remains unclear, but many users in eastern Canada reported service disruptions throughout the morning.

For customers still experiencing issues, Bell advised a modem reboot via a notice on its Facebook page.

Top Haiti Internet Provider Partially Restores Network After Fire

Digicel, one of Haiti’s primary internet service providers, has partially restored its network following a fire near the capital that caused widespread outages. According to Jean-Philippe Brun, the local director for Digicel, teams worked continuously to repair the damage, and one of three affected fiber-optic links was already re-established within hours. He confirmed that all connections were expected to be fully restored by the end of the day.

The outage affected the country’s internet services, with Digicel and state-owned NATCOM being the main operators. Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, has been severely impacted by ongoing armed gang violence, which has also led to the collapse of various state services and institutions. The country has been struggling with basic infrastructure issues, as demonstrated in September when protests at the national hydroelectric plant led to temporary shutdowns, forcing locals to rely on solar batteries and generators for power.
