With data at the forefront, Codified aims to introduce flexibility into governance

Codified, a startup born out of Madrona Ventures, aims to address the complex challenge of data compliance in today’s enterprise software landscape. Led by founder and CEO Yatharth Gupta, the company recognizes the pivotal role that data plays in modern technology and the increasing importance of compliance with regulations governing its use.

With data serving as the cornerstone of innovation for businesses, Codified seeks to streamline access to data while ensuring compliance with regulations and internal policies. Gupta emphasized the difficulty companies face in controlling access to their data, highlighting the need for solutions that enable the right individuals to access data while preventing unauthorized access.

At its core, Codified’s mission is to empower companies to leverage their data for innovation by providing easy and compliant access to it within the organization. By addressing the complexities of data compliance, Codified aims to facilitate smoother workflows and enable companies to maximize the value of their data assets without compromising security or regulatory requirements.

As data takes center stage, Codified wants to bring flexibility to governance

Gupta identifies a significant gap in existing software solutions for data compliance, noting that many large companies struggle with rigid policies that leave them vulnerable, particularly when policy changes are required. He aims to address this challenge by providing a flexible approach that translates policies into code, enabling implementation across various applications and easily accommodating changes as needed.

Codified offers multiple methods for authoring policies, including natural language, declarative formats, or through a user interface, allowing organizations to choose the most suitable approach. Once policies are authored, Codified transforms them into executable code that can be implemented in diverse ways and modified with ease.

One key feature of Codified is its support for setting conditions, such as verifying whether employees have completed security training within a specified timeframe or determining their involvement in sensitive projects. By establishing hardcoded data access rules based on individual employee attributes, applications used, or project affiliations, Codified provides a more dynamic and adaptive approach compared to traditional group-based policies. This approach addresses the limitations of relying solely on static groups, which may not accurately reflect changes in employee roles and responsibilities over time.
