Apple Reportedly Testing OLED Panels from Japanese Supplier for Cheaper Vision Headset Model

Apple Vision Pro, launched earlier this year as its first mixed reality (MR) headset, came with a hefty price tag of $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2,92,900), making it a premium device available only in select markets. However, Apple has reportedly been working on a more affordable version of the Vision headset. According to recent reports, this lower-cost model may feature downgraded OLED displays to cut production costs while still providing users with a quality MR experience.

Apple’s Move Toward Affordable Vision Headsets

The Korean publication The Elec reports that Apple has received a sample OLED panel from Japan Display Inc. (JDI) that is specifically designed for MR headsets. This panel reportedly uses less expensive materials compared to the OLED-on-Silicon (OLEDoS) panels in the current Vision Pro. Instead, the new OLED panels may offer a resolution of around 1,500ppi, which is notably lower than the high-end 3,391ppi resolution of the first-generation Vision Pro displays.

This move to adopt lower-resolution displays could help Apple make the Vision headset more affordable for a wider audience. The technology incorporated in these panels reportedly draws inspiration from Sony, Apple’s primary supplier of the OLED displays used in the Vision Pro.
