2K Announces Revival of Top Spin Tennis Series with Upcoming Launch of TopSpin 2K25

TopSpin 2K25 to be Developed by Hangar 13, the 2K-Owned Studio Known for Recent Mafia Games.

Top Spin, the much-loved tennis video game franchise dormant for over a decade, is set to make a comeback. Publisher 2K announced the revival on Tuesday with the introduction of TopSpin 2K25, accompanied by a teaser trailer. The announcement strategically coincides with the ongoing Australian Open, tapping into the tennis excitement generated by the first Grand Slam of the year. Hangar 13, the 2K-owned studio renowned for the recent Mafia games, will lead the development of TopSpin 2K25. Although 2K hasn’t specified a release date, the game is slated to arrive “coming soon.” Given the 2K25 moniker, it’s reasonable to anticipate a release later this year, aligning with the pattern of other 2K sports game franchises.

The teaser trailer for TopSpin 2K25 features fully licensed Australian Open content, offering glimpses of gameplay and cinematics rendered in the game’s engine. While the trailer doesn’t reveal licensed players, it’s sensible to expect inclusion of some of the biggest real-life tennis stars in the final game. In the trailer description, 2K declares, “TopSpin 2K25 is the next must-play sports game from 2K that fully immerses fans into the world of tennis,” promising more details on the release date, game features, and more in due time.

The announcement of TopSpin 2K25 marks the return of the Top Spin series, nearly 13 years after the release of the last game. Top Spin 4, developed by 2K Czech, was launched in March 2011 for PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360 consoles.

It’s important to note that 2K Czech, responsible for both the Top Spin and Mafia series, merged with Hangar 13 in 2017. Hangar 13 is currently known to be working on an upcoming Mafia sequel, informally referred to as Mafia 4. As of 2022, Hangar 13 had indicated that the next Mafia game was still “a few years away” from an official unveiling.

Although 2K has not disclosed the specific platforms for TopSpin 2K25, it is anticipated to be available on both current-generation and last-generation consoles. The return of the Top Spin franchise is eagerly awaited, bringing a renewed focus to tennis video games. Despite the extended absence of Top Spin, it’s important to note that there have been other tennis video game releases in the market. In 2022, Australian developer Big Ant Studios introduced two tennis games—AO Tennis 2 and Tennis World Tour 2—both published by Nacon.
